Home Page Introduction It’s Not Just Another Diet! Ready to Get Started? Recipes Press Materials An Introduction to the New American Plate The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has introduced a highly successful approach to eating that combines the latest science, flavorful recipes, and old-fashioned, American common sense. With the New American Plate, it’s easier than ever to create meals that lower your risk for cancer and other chronic diseases while helping to manage your weight. Two events telegraphed the urgent need for this message. In 1997, AICR’s expert panel report, Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective, established the link between diets high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans and the reduced incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases. In 1999, a host of "quick-fix" fad diet books began to glut bookstore shelves and bestseller lists. Most of these books urge readers to cut back on the very vegetables, fruits, and other plant foods that help prevent disease. In answer to this, the New American Plate integrates AICR’s cancer prevention message with sound advice about safe, effective weight management. It’s Not Just Another Diet! The New American Plate isn’t a diet. It isn’t another complex system for calculating calories, fat grams or carbohydrates. It’s simply a fresh way of looking at what you eat every day, and making a few simple changes that pay off both in the short-term (weight management) and in the long-term (overall health and disease prevention). Here’s all that the New American Plate asks you to do: Take a good look at your plate. That’s it. You’ll learn about proportion and portion size, and how you can start putting them to work at your very next meal. Proportion The New American Plate aims for meals composed of 2/3 (or more) plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans and 1/3 (or less) animal protein. (See the New American Plate drawing at the top of this page for a graphic illustration of what that means.) You’ll learn easy steps to making the transition to these proportions, and you’ll find recipes for nourishing, flavorful pilafs, stir-fries, casseroles and salads. Portion Size Here’s where the common sense comes in. Despite all the quick-fix promises of fad diets, one thing remains resolutely true: if you want to lose weight, you have to eat less. In fact, many health experts believe the current American obesity epidemic has its roots in the oversized portions served in our homes and restaurants. With the New American Plate, you’ll see how eating less doesn’t have to mean going hungry. You’ll learn how to “eyeball” the portions on your plate to bring them more in line with what your body really needs each day. You’ll find tips for controlling portion size when at home or in restaurants, and how paying closer attention to how much you eat can make a real and long-lasting difference in controlling weight.
